select from my separate journeys in bulgaria
Every country has a story to tell, none more so than Bulgaria. This is a country grappling with its aspirations for the future but held back by a past it can't yet fully erase. Travelling here is an opportunity to witness a country pivoting, rather awkwardly, from the old communist Bloc to a capitalist Europe.
sofia & buzludzha
Travelling for hours from Sofia high into the Central Balkan Mountain range to enter an abandoned communist headquarters in the shape of a giant UFO must rank as one of my weirder travel moments.
sofia & plovdiv
This was a double Bulgarian city break to Sofia in the country's west and Plovdiv in the south. Bulgaria, a land of golden cupolas and the Cyrillic alphabet, is trying hard to leave its communist past behind.
