australia

Welcome to my travels in Australia. This is land of kangaroos and koalas, Indigenous culture and the dusty red Outback, surfer dudes and addictive television soap operas. Away from these cliched images of Australia, however, lies a country as complex as it is vast. Choose from my separate journeys in this ancient country.

australian capital territory

Canberra was our base for an outdoor hiking adventure to the Australian Capital Territory's majestic Namadgi National Park, a trip characterised by snow-covered mountain ranges, wintry bushland and incredible vistas.

queensland

This was a wild adventure through Tropical Far North Queensland from Townsville to Cape Tribulation: snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, walking along deserted beaches and climbing mountains in ancient rainforests.

northern tasmania

Initially basing ourselves in Launceston, northern Tasmania, we set our sights on climbing the iconic 1545 metre Cradle Mountain on Christmas Day. This was my second visit to Australia's heart-shaped island state.

south australia

This was my seventh Australian State or Territory. Flying into Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, we soon ventured further afield to Kangaroo Island and to hike the Flinders Ranges in the South Australian outback.

central new south wales

This was an adventure through Central New South Wales, hiking the crooked Warrumbungle Mountain Range, beholding the forested flatness of The Pilliga and ascending the incredible Mount Kaputar.

new south wales far north

This was a 2000km road trip through New South Wales Far North. What I thought would be a pedestrian trip turned into an adventure with giant stinging trees, thousands of Flying Foxes and sub-tropical rainforests.

outback new south wales

We hit the vast open road to sample a substantial slice of Country and Outback New South Wales. From Wild West-style Gold Rush towns to surreal lunar-like landscapes, this was a road trip to end all road trips.

northern territory

This was a trip 3000km westward from Sydney to experience the evocative and iconic Outback in Australia's legendary Northern Territory; a land of red deserts, Indigenous peoples and a magical rock called Uluru.

western australia

This was a visit to Perth, the state capital of Western Australia and one of the most isolated cities on the planet. It was also a golden opportunity to visit the magical land of the Quokkas on Rottnest Island.

canberra

This mini road trip to Australian Capital Territory was my fourth Aussie state. A mere 300km south west of Sydney lies Canberra, this sunburnt country's modernist bush capital and national meeting place.

sydney

This page chronicles my first year living in the New South Wales state capital and Australia's most populous city. Welcome to a Sydney viewed through the appreciative eyes of a British immigrant: me.

eastern tasmania

Starting from the capital Hobart, this was a road trip alon the famous Great Eastern Drive in Tasmania; a drive punctuated by wilderness, waterfalls, rainforests, mountainscapes and pure white beaches.

coastal new south wales

This was a 1000km road trip along Coastal New South Wales from Minnamurra in the south to Port Macquarie in the Mid-North; a thrilling journey of sand dunes, Jurassic rainforests and pristine beaches.

victoria & new south wales

This was a road trip along Australia's south east coast through New South Wales and Victoria, driving along the famous Princes Highway stopping at Narooma, Mallacoota and the awesome Blue Mountains.
